Prepping for Winter Weather

How We Decide Closures, Plus Plans for Student Meals

Dear Charlottesville City Schools staff, students, families, and community partners:

As our region prepares for a potentially record-breaking snow/ice storm this weekend, I’m writing to share with you our division’s plans for next week, including a way to pick up student meals.

Decisions About Closing School

When making a decision about closing or delaying school due to weather, CCS considers road, sidewalk, and bus conditions that impact students, school staff, and bus drivers. Our staff works with the City of Charlottesville to make these decisions.

For this particular storm, there are two factors that may require us to close school multiple days after snow is done falling:
  • The forecast is for heavy snow/ice followed by below-freezing weather. This means there will be no opportunity for snow/ice to melt, possibly extending the time it will take for roads to be clear.
  • Historically, following heavy snow/ice, even after roads are clear, some school bus stops remain inaccessible because of high piles of accumulated/plowed snow.
As always, we will announce any closures or schedule changes on a day-by-day basis, either the evening before school or by 5:30am on the school day.

Student Meals During Closures

If schools are closed for multiple days, our Family and Community Engagement team will begin distributing free lunches for students starting on the 2nd consecutive day of schools being closed (if it is safe to do so).

What: Free meals for CCS students beginning on the 2nd day in a row that schools are closed
Where: Charlottesville Middle School
When: 12 – 2pm
Who: Students (or parents/guardians on their behalf) may come to pick up a meal

Please be aware that due to federal guidelines, we can provide these meals only to current CCS students, not family members or other individuals. For additional food resources, see this post from our Family and Community Engagement Team.

School closures and delays are never easy decisions. Ultimately, we prioritize the safety of students and staff. Thank you for your understanding and support as we navigate winter weather together.

Warm regards,
Dr. Royal A. Gurley, Jr.
